Summer calls for post-work cocktails and rooftop bars. Throughout this season our city changes its skin, resurfacing from winter hibernation and spring blossom to become a mecca of music festivals, epic sunsets and ice-cold Pimms. One of the best little hideouts I’ve been to so far this year was none other than the launch of the John Lewis Gardening Society rooftop.
Open for three months, this little green haven in the heart of Oxford Street is an oasis for for hungry shoppers looking for somewhere to breathe. Its quaint decor and lush plantations offer people a break from the central London madness and a spot where they can enjoy some of the best food in the city. From June through to August, the menu will be taken over by three different local London restaurants, who will each give their own twist. It’s The Diary running the show at present and having nibbled on nearly all of their creatively delicious dishes available, it’s safe to say your Oxford Street lunch break will be a taste experience nothing less than extraordinary.
For those of you, however, who might not get chance to make it to central for your rooftop fix, I wanted to share a list of some of my favourite little open-air retreats in London this summer:
Frank’s Bar, Peckham. Set on the roof of a multi-story carpark, this hidden gem is worth the trek. Don’t be put off by the fact that you are literally getting lost in empty carpark, the cocktail and view you’ll find at the end will be worth the journey.
Boundary, Shoreditch. If you’re like me and you love anything rustic and relaxing, then the Boundary terrace is right down your street. It’s quaint and offers some of the most delicious Mediterranean style dishes around, which you can sit and enjoy surrounded by an orangery of citrus trees.
Pergola on the Roof, Shepherd’s Bush. This huge rooftop boasts 4 different restaurants, 2 bars and 400 seats. It’s the ideal place that brings together merriment and great food, which sounds right down my street.
Coq D’Argent, Bank. For the high-flyers and city-slickers amongst us, this elegant rooftop is the place to be after hours. The perfectly manicured garden boasts stunning views across the City of London and is the perfect backdrop to your ridiculously over-priced (but worth it) G&T.
