Last weekend was one of my closest friend’s birthdays. This called for a good old celebration. Four girls, lots of prosecco, and a long list of where to go… We were thinking for a while of ways to mark the occasion, where we could escape to, what we could do. Finally, we decided what we needed was to get out of the city and head to beautiful Oxford. And what a perfect choice that was!

Saturday morning after a mulled-wine filled Friday evening the night before saw us slowly but surely making our way to Oxford. With some mini Hummingbird cupcakes in tow (but of course) we took the smooth 1hr train to the city. I had found the sweetest little B&B for us to set up shop for the night, St Margaret’s Hotel, situated just a short walk outside the city centre. I have been to Oxford before myself, but revisiting it I had forgotten how quaint it was. The old stone buildings, some dating almost a thousand years, they have this beautifully cosy feeling about them – just what we needed in festive December.

Oxford University is typically the main focus of your visit, but if any of you are like us and enjoy a weekend of brunching, strolling, sight-seeing, laughing, dining, gossiping, oh and a little bit of dancing, you’ll like my reccos below. Since it was only a weekend that we were there, I have just a mini list of recommendations for any of you planning a trip to Oxford.

My recommendations for a short city break:

Hotel: St Maragarets – Quaint and typically English.
Brunch: Gee’s – Set in a bright, chic conservatory – I wanted to bring this brunch haven straight back to London with me! (Don’t forget to try the brunch cocktails, they’re divine)
Lunch/Dinner: The Old Bank Hotel – A stunning 4* hotel situated in the heart of the city, the perfect hideaway after a busy day of sightseeing.
Dinner: The Trout Inn – Cosy, delicious and right on the river. Ideal spot all year round, but especially on those long and warm summer nights.
Drinks: Raoul’s Bar – Great cocktails, great atmosphere.
Sights: Blenheim Palace – A beautiful day trip out of the city to see the local stately home. More on this coming to the blog shortly!
