One of the best things about living in London is the unlimited access to unique hidden away treasures. Our multicultural city gives people from all over the world a chance to find or even create their own little corner where they feel at home. And one such find I stumbled upon recently is that of Maitre Choux. Situated in the heart of South Kensington, this authentically French patisserie sprinkles a colourful taste of France onto the streets of London, specialising in, you guessed it, all things choux!

Headed up by Michelin star chef Joakim Prat, the seven-chef team work tirelessly each day to create fresh batches of the most amazing and beautifully colourful choux, chouquettes and eclairs, all using their perfected choux pastry technique. The eclairs come in nine different flavours, depending on the season, given that only the freshest ingredients are used. From homemade pistachio paste, to gold flecked raspberries, when you see just how perfect each and every eclair is, you’ll understand just how much work goes into them.

I spent the morning in this delightful bakery last week, choosing to taste a pistachio eclair and a raspberry choux (FYI the choice was near impossible given how utterly beautiful they all look). Both creations were so different and equally as mouth-watering. As you bite into the eclair, you taste the crispy outside of the choux soften to come together with the light creamy filling – it’s just unreal and absolutely delicious. To go with my colourful delights, I was served a perfectly made Monmouth coffee – a coffee roast that many Londoners swear by. (After living in Italy and becoming a total coffee-snob, I can vouch for their cappuccino!)

It was great seeing so many French clientele coming in to pick-up their morning chouquettes, showing just how Maitre Choux reminds them a little bit of home. If that doesn’t scream authentic, then I don’t know what does! So if you fancy adding a bit of colour to your morning, get to Maitre Choux and start your day on a cloud of eclairs. You’ll be spoilt for choice and spoilt for colour, but make sure you get there early – freshly made means once they’ve gone, they’ve gone!
